What is my resolution every year when I am not pregnant? Lose weight!
It has worked sometimes. I'm thinking I need more specifics this year.
I think I'll add
1. Get motivated earlier in the morning to either do my housework so I have more time when the kids go to bed to get on the mill OR decide to get on the mill before kids are up.
2. Actually go down the stairs to get on the mill.
3. Don't get sidetracked by passing the downstairs pantry.
4. Actually get on the mill and plug it in.
5. Stay on the thing past the first 10 grueling minutes.
And onto other 'real' resolutions-
1. Develop more patience with L.
2. Remember L is still a two year old even if she looks and talks older.
3. Read to C more. She doesn't get that nearly as much as the other kids did.
4. Help D find what D is a star at.
5. Help T with his reading more. He is doing so well considering how little help he has received.
6. Let M grow up. I need to let her do her own hair occasionally even if it kills me to let her go out in public like that.
7. Buy myself new turtlenecks. Not only are most turtlenecks not meant for someone my height but they aren't meant for someone with a noggin as big as mine. That means that a little hold will develop in the back after I pull it over my head a number of times. DH told me to trash them and buy some new ones. It might help if the new ones looked like they weren't 3/4 length sleeves too.
8. Get rid of 5 things a day that we don't need until my house is decluttered.
9. Put things on a calendar and actually look at it.
10. Put one thing that I am grateful for in each of my blogs so I am not a total whiner.
So for the grateful thing... I'm grateful that little specks of blue are peaking from behind the clouds and letting some sun through.

Overabundance
On Christmas Eve I was wrapping presents. Our kids generally get 3 presents between Mom and Dad and Santa. Then Santa usually leaves a little something in the stocking and a new spin toothbrush. I looked at the gifts and thought maybe just maybe I should add one more in. This happens every year. Thinking back on years past I decided against adding anything in. Boy was I glad.
On Christmas morning there were presents EVERYWHERE. There were so many that I almost felt ill. Such excess!
Still, the excess has given the boys a bunch to play with and they haven't started fighting. L had a very rough Christmas day. She needs her regular structure and NAP! Not enough sleep on Christmas even and a very exciting morning made for a very cranky little girl. She spent much of the day screaming her wants at people. We have been working so hard with her on this and she had made so much progress. So it was frustrating to have her screaming at every little thing. Yesterday was much better though. She is much more charming when she is well rested and not screaming. She was funny on Christmas. For lunch I cooked some oh so healthy chicken nuggets. She had eaten a ton of the things and we were making her eat slices of apples in between to slow her down. I told her that she had to eat an apple slice and she pouted. Then I hear her asking Grandma for a nugget. Grandma knew about the apples and gave her the same answer. A minute later she went to my sister. She received the same response. She was not about to give up and went to my brother's wife. She almost gave her a nugget and then I reminded L she had to eat an apple slice first. She just doesn't give up that one. I'm sure some day it's going to be a great quality to have.
C had her first real Christmas. Last year she had only been home one day and so it's wasn't very Christmasy. She found a candy cane and wandered around with that thing making a big fat mess of herself. She was adorable though. That candy cane was her piece of heaven.
M LOVED her American Girl doll from Grandma. I knew that Grandma would outdo us with her gift. M's good friend came over and they played and played.
T was happy with his scooter and loved the Transformers and TMNT's.
D was thrilled with his toys until Papa opened his freaky Roboraptor thing and then he cried because he wanted a robot. Santa wouldn't bring a robot dino because mom hates the things. He got over it when he played with Papa's. Luckily, he also lost interest in it quickly. I'm sure Santa is glad that he didn't waste the money on one.
L loved all her gifts. She is in baby heaven. Her newest is Pinkie. I'm sure you can't guess why.
All the kids claimed to hear Santa.
Oh to be a kid. I'm sure they did hear Santa though. I know Santa was in our house busily wrapping gifts.
And since then we have tried to start recovering. One of the springs in the garage broke and they came to repair it today. I can see now how people get killed under those doors. They were able to fix it today. I love having a garage. I'm wondering what else can break now. We already replaced the dryer, the fridge, the hall, and who knows what else. But now the spring should last 7 more years or so. So it was worth the $$$.
DH is snowboarding today. I wanted him to get out and enjoy the fresh snow. He turns into a little kid when he sees that powder.
Life has been hectic but for now all is well.

9 years
Today is my Niko's birthday. He would be nine years old. I haven't had much time to reflect on him in the last few months. In fact, I haven't had the time to really reflect on much of anything except making it through each day.
Last night, quite late, after shopping for a few last minute Christmas gifts, I reflected. I didn't do my traditional reflecting. It's usually about how the night before he was born we went to a big extended family party for DH's family. I wore ~shudder~ navy overalls that I am sure made me look like a giant butterball. That day had been a long one. After we went and saw the Christmas lights at the Mesa Temple.
Usually I go through all the motions on Niko's birthday eve. But last night I was too busy running around getting presents. It wasn't until I had to slow down and nurse my crying baby before going to bed. I held my little one, the only one that looks like Niko. He had such a different look than the other 3 biokids. As C has grown older it has made me really wonder what he would look like. I fed her and it opened the gate to remembering. I remembered his little scrawny baby. For a 34 weeker he was over 18 inches long. That's a long baby for that gestation. Because he wasn't getting all of his oxygen he only weighed 4 lbs. 2.5 oz. Someone who hasn't had a dead baby wouldn't understand how important that extra .5 oz is. For someone whose babies lives 1 minute the 1 minute is SO very important. But in reality how different is the outcome from someone who had a baby died in it's last moments in the birth canal? The outcome and the pain are the same. But the 1 minute is still so important to those people. To me that .5 oz was like another person's one minute. I know it doesn't matter and it almost makes me chuckle inside to think I would even think that way because it isn't me.
So I remembered a bit last night but not a ton as I was exhausted and knew that special birthday day or not there would be much work to do today.
C was up a bunch of the night. She slept for 3 hours and then got up screaming and would not go back down. I was having a hard time breathing again and so I got up to take the inhaler my mom gave me last night when I couldn't catch my breath. I ended up dealing with C for 2 hours. I kept thinking, okay, my little treasured crying baby. This is what I would have given my life for 9 years ago. I'm trying to treasure you. But will you please let me treasure you while you sleep in my arms.
She finally obliged and we stayed in a chair in my parents' family room. Then L started screaming, "Mom, come put my blankie on me NOW!" Hmmm.... she has this thing with screaming. You would think she would have clued in that we don't ever do things for her when she is throwing a tantrum. So she screamed. I sat in my chair and snuggled C. She screamed some more and then more. I didn't go back to sleep. I have to admit that it's hard to feel loving and attached feelings to any kid bio or not when they scream at you when you have only had 3 hours of sleep.
We got moving in the morning. Still, no real sadness came my way. Life has to be automated now to make it through. The toothbrushes are lined up. Toothpaste is dispensed. All teeth are checked. Hair is combed. Diapers are changed.
We went to get flowers, two bouquets. I felt that little emotion creeping in. But, there are breakables in the flower shop. Emotion had to get pushed back inside. Then we headed to the cemetery. The kids got so excited. You think Christmas lights are exciting. Try heading to the cemetery with some flowers. I lost it. How much trouble can kids get into at the cemetery? (Okay, they can get into some. D had to go to the car at the end because he wouldn't head DH's call to not walk on headstones.) The kids took the flowers and M tried to give Niko the short end of the stick. DH told her that today it was a leftover day for Joshua and to give the majority to Niko. Because M and T remember Joshua they seem to favor him just a bit. D kept asking me, "Mom, why are you crying?" He couldn't quite understand that I just might be sad. Should a five year old get it? How could I get him to understand that I would be sad when he didn't even cry when he left his parents never to see them again. I couldn't explain it to him. It makes me sad for him again. Maybe he was just given extra blessings of comfort, the kind we received when we had Niko. He really had no idea why I was sad.
Then the kids did their trek across the cemetery to Joshua. Someone a couple of 'doors' down did the brilliant thing and decorated the border of their kid's plot with really cute suckers made out of a bunch of those peppermints that you get from restaurants. 6 around one in the center on a stick. Well, it has rained in Arizona recently. And now there were bees EVERYWHERE. It was bee heaven. Have I mentioned how scared I am of stinging creatures. We stopped at Joshua's. I cried again. How could I not? Then I walked around to check out the new 'neighbors'. I found a little girl that had a birthday today. It would be her first. It was obvious her parents hadn't come out yet so I had M go and take some flowers off his grave to give to her. As a parent it's always nice to think that someone else stops by. That mom doesn't have to know that it wasn't someone that knows them.
We left and went to lunch, visited a friend, and bought shoes. C's are the only real 'Nikolas' shoes. She got purple suede boots. They are so not practical. I love them.
That was the day. Nine years ago now I knew that he had just died. I knew my life was in jeopardy if they didn't quickly deliver him. My life would have been so different. It would have been so much the same.
It's all part of a big plan. I am sure of that. Today I just took a break from trying to figure it out. It's back to the drawing board tomorrow.
We have have a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle for a life and we aren't going to get it put together unless we get back to figuring out how the pieces go together. Some days we don't make a single match. On those days we just sort things out or try to keep someone from messing up our hard work. Other days we get lucky and find several edges. I didn't figure anything out today. I know Niko fits into the picture. I know how he blessed our lives and helped us become who we are. I just wish I had a little more control over my puzzle.
Last night, quite late, after shopping for a few last minute Christmas gifts, I reflected. I didn't do my traditional reflecting. Are we getting better?
Maybe I should just hope to get that stomach bug so I will quit being paranoid. Do you know what it's like to sit at the Nutcracker wondering how you will get out and down the stairs if it suddenly hits. I had one of those 32 oz. hospital cups from one of the kids in my purse just in case.
I didn't get sick. The Nutcracker was well done. (I love a nice professional Nutcracker. I can barely watch one that isn't done by some good pros.) M had a good time. And I loved having a break.
We had a church party tonight. M finally was okay with the fact that she was a goat in the nativity. I can't remember if I wrote down how devastated she was when she was asked to be a goat (the worst of all the barn animals according to her). Well, her headpiece turned out pretty dang cute and she decided that being a goat wasn't too bad.
T and D sang with the 'heavenly hosts'. They all were wearing white shirts, many of which were stained because all the kids were allowed to eat dinner first.
All the kids waited to talk to Santa. Isn't it too late to put in your request? I'm thinking Santa has done all his shopping. But he told D and T to be nice to one another and so that's worth standing in line for.
All L worried about was the candy cane that Santa gave her. I told her she couldn't have it and she went from person to person begging to have it opened. I told her tomorrow. I bet it's the first thing she asks for.
You know, I really like where we live. There was a great turnout at the church party. It's nice to go somewhere and feel like you belong. I wouldn't say that I even really 'know' all of those people but I can mingle with them and feel comfy.
And now, the day is over. Whew! Oh and did I mention that DH went and bought a new dryer today.
I should write it again because it's so important. DH bought a new dryer today.
My life might just get better. I think if I can get my laundry under control I will be liking life so much more. There is just something about trying to scrounge up this and that because the dryer takes forever (or it's really fast but you can't leave it on when you aren't around for fear it will start a fire). I'm really looking forward to doing my wash now.
The bad news is that it doesn't fit in our laundry area so well. We bought one that is a super duper capacity and there is a tiled edge to the place where the washer and dryer sit. Right now the dryer is up on the ledge and on an angle. I don't care. As long as it works. DH might be retiling that room next. For all I care it can stay on an angle.
Okay... off to bed. YIPPEEEE! I just LOVE sleeping. Actually, never mind. I need to lay out the clothes for the kids for church tomorrow first.

A 'Grown Up' Party
First of all, can I just say that I was APPALLED at how many grammar errors were in the post on C's birthday. I'm not about to go and edit them though because I am sure I will want to laugh over it someday. I just don't know when someday will be.
Last night we went to a small work party. It was at a beautiful home about 30 minutes north of us. (Last night it was more like 50 though as it was snowing and traffic was very slow.) I have to admit I was antsy about going. We couldn't find a sitter so DH's sister was a dear and drove down over an hour to watch the kids. That is a real sacrifice and we appreciated it so much. I was not only worried about the kids, but also me. I have that fear of getting sick when the kids have been sick. It always happens when there is a stomach bug. Yesterday my stomach churned all day long. Part of it was the fact that I didn't eat much of anything for fear that I would throw up and part of it was just the simple fear of barfing in someone else's nice house.
The other thing that I HATE to admit is that in reality, I'm just not really super up for socializing with people who have lives. I asked DH what to wear and he said business casual. My thought was that I was in casual and that was velour pants that I patched because one spot started to wear and a tee shirt that was a decade old and only not stained because it's ugly enough that it doesn't get worn often. So business casual would be one step up from that. It worked out that a button down, jeans, and some hi heeled boots were fine. Still, there's just something about feeling like a frumpy mom, off to mingle with people who get out in the world that is bothersome.
Off we go. I warned DH of what might happen. I was armed with a giant cup in the car. In the end, my stomach was fine. The food was great. I was just hungry. Everyone was nice. People had funny things to say. But that wasn't the real end of the humor. What was our activity? Wii.
We played tennis and bowling. Only in my area would that be a real party. It was hilarious. (Oh and I won the bowling, way to go me!) I just have to laugh that we played wii at a party. A friend of mine wrote in her blog how her mother really liked playing tennis on wii and kepts saying she is 'sporty'. I finally understood.
The best thing though was the conversation with DH on the way home. We don't really have any kidless time when DH isn't tiling the hall and I am not trying to undo other damage. We talked about the house we went to was gorgeous, the television was fabulous (a 70 incher), the game was fun, etc. Then we both agreed we are content with what we have. It's nice to be content. Would I like to have some couches that don't scream, "We've seen better days!" Sure. Would I love to have an entertainment center that hasn't had the veneer picked off of it by kids? Yep again. But am I happy with what I have? I am. I'm so grateful to be able to be happy for others and their things and not feel like I have to have them. It has to be one of the greatest blessings to me and my family. I'm too busy to be trying to keep up with the Joneses.
But playing wii with the Joneses can be pretty dang fun!

Can I just say how much I adore T
When the throw up is almost cleaned up (and can you believe that D slept through having a carpet cleaning machine in his room.... I think he needs a nap during the day because he is too dang tired at night. No one should be able to sleep through that) and the kid is showered and clean you see the vulnerable little kid that you babied as a small child. T was a pill today. He hit his big sister, teased his little sister L, and snagged C's new toys from her grasp (and they are in bleach now... don't worry).
I was not quite at my wit's end but I was getting closer. And then I saw him cry out in the shower that his stomach hurt again. His little face was pale. He wanted out and he wanted help into his clothes. He needed his mama. I was needed to stroke his face and to tell him to hit the pan. It's nice to be needed.
That being said, I am hoping that this is all I am needed. I have dreaded having 3 kids with a stomach bug all at one. Five seems more than overwhelming.

question answered
What will happen when you have bunks and someone get a stomach bug? They barf over the side and it ends up EVERYWHERE. The silver lining... my nose is still a tiny bit plugged up and I can't smell it all.
