Just count 'em

SEVEN miles... that's how many I did. I'm still surprised. Who would have ever thought that some chubby lady could make it seven miles including a hill? I wonder if it's going to be like this every week as I add miles. In under seven weeks I had better be able to make it the thirteen that I need to go.

What else? The weekend was rather uneventful. That's not a bad thing. I went yard saling with a friend. I found an unused fire extinguisher. That was a find for me considering I needed to buy one. I got a few other things too but nothing too thrilling.

I was wiped out by the time I got home because I awakened that morning at 3:45 and couldn't go to back to sleep. So you can imagine that by noon I was wiped out. I tried to take a nap later in the afternoon but chose my location unwisely. If you really want to rest you don't try to go to sleep on a couch in the main room. It just doesn't work. I finally decided to just get up and run.

I felt pretty good when I got home and then I stopped moving. Boy did the pain set in. I was so dang sore. I know it was that hill. My legs were fine until I had to go uphill and then they just start burning.

DH rented Sherlock Holmes and I watched some of it. I was just too tired to really pay attention.

Yesterday was a funny day for chores. DH found the kids watching TV before their chores were done. So he added extra chores. You would have thought the guy chopped off their arms or something. S did the best. She complained the least and as a result she wasn't given so many. M was the worst. She finally got her room done (a necessity before breakfast) but didn't get lunch until the end of the afternoon because she just WOULD NOT do her chores. She ready I don't know how many books but she wouldn't work. At the end of the day she buckled.

Today we had church. I cancelled choir because I am not sure what I am going to do for the summer and well, I figured everyone would be out town. So I call and start cancelling and then realize that almost everyone is home. But no one complained so that's a plus!

I fell asleep in Sunday school and was awakened when someone propped my head up. Oops. I don't know what is wrong with me. I think the teacher is really fabulous. It's not one of those this teacher is great yadda yadda she might be reading my blog. No way! She is just down right fabulous and me, well, I am tired during her class every week.

We came home and had dinner and M made brownies. At this very moment C is trying to steal frosting as M frosts them. C is making her slurping sounds as she waits. She's so excited for a treat.

And even better than treats is the fact that bedtime starts in less than 30 minutes. Oh how I love bedtime.

Practically Giddy

The first full day of summer vacation is done! I am now more than one percent of the way to the next school year. They practiced their instruments this morning and then were less than thrilled to be served quinoa. After that is was on to math work. I was going to wait until Monday and then I decided I didn't want them to say, "But we didn't do it last Friday!" So math it was. I don't feel too bad about this. I think they should get a little school work and 30 minutes of reading every day. There is no need to veg in front of the television all summer.

Then I dropped the kids off and went to my ballet class. I think we have the teacher convinced to do at least a one day a week class in the fall. I'm thrilled about that. Until then I think I'll take a night class at a different studio.

The afternoon disappeared. We had neighborhood kids over. Boys are wild! I'm thinking I am going to have to put a few more rules in place. I did add one today. If you are visiting and don't help clean up the toys you played with the next time you come over you are told to come another day. I just can't have the play and run thing all summer times sometimes 5 kids.

The boys had a total of 3 friends over today and M had one over. It gets busy.

DH came home in time to watch the kids while I attended M's dance class. This is the time of year we are allowed to watch one time. Things are coming along and she is improving. I have to figure out how to help her engage her muscles a little more. But I don't want to be the pushy stage mom. Hmmm.... what to do.

The best news of the day is that I might just have a sitter for my kids for a week this summer. I told DH I had been working on it and so he is now scouring vacations for us. Right now a trip to Montreal is in the lead. It's not super spendy but would seem more exotic than a trip to somewhere like Vegas. Oh and they speak French there... well, it's not quite the same French I used to speak but I should be able to make it work.

That's where giddy came in. I might get a vacation. I might get a vacation. (All of that is said with the neener neener tone of voice.) So I am hoping the details will work out. DH and I were gone for 4 nights over 6 years ago and since then we have had a couple of overnighter vacations. It's just hard to get someone to watch a bunch of kids for several nights in a row. And the kids are more than thrilled with the choice of sitter. So I am hoping it all pans out. We would be happy. The kiddos would be happy. And hopefully our sitter wouldn't be terribly unhappy.

So that is where things stand. I got my 3.1 miles in this morning including running my big ol' long hill without stopping. My overall time was good for me and the first mile and a half were the fastest I had ever run. We'll see how tomorrow goes when I need to put 7 miles into these legs. But first I need to yard sale :)

School's Out

So on facebook today there are gazillions of people (slight exageration there) saying how thrilled they are for school to be out. Who are they kidding? Is it kind of like having a baby... your brain gets all foggy and you forget what the end of July and early August are like?

Two of my kids were thrilled to be out of school today. I came home and took the boys' pictures so I can compare them with the beginning of the year. M came home sobbing. She just loves her teacher and is so sad she won't see her next year. My M is a tender heart. She gets it from me and it made me hurt for her knowing how she felt inside. Luckily, I could snuggle with her for a minute and then her best friend came by and they went off to Ripstik. I can't make it better for her. I did tell her I emailed the principal and told him about her good qualities and that if he gets the funds to hire another teacher for next year, he should consider her. M's response was, "Well just tell me if I am not going to see her next year so I don't cry when she isn't there on the first day of school." She even wore her teacher's favorite color today.

T's on his date with dad. He's off to ride bumper cars and bumper boats. When you only get a date around twice a year you have to make it good. He was bummed because he had to come home and clean his room. I once again found bread in his room as well as another bag of empty marshmallows. What the heck kid?

D is getting bored already. He's played on the monkey bars, gone for a bike ride, shown me his whole portfolio, and now doesn't know what to do with himself. It might just be a long summer for the kiddo. He hasn't even been home 4 hours yet. I just told him to go find something to play or I was going to pick out a book for him to read. It seems that he is now interested in entertaining himself.

S fell apart this afternoon about 10 minutes after the kids got home from school. I'm working on pulling her out of it. Right now she is marching around playing on a pretend horn doing a new version of "We're Painting the Roses Red." I'm hoping to get her all the way out before bedtime so we can be off to a good start manana.

C just woke up from a nap. And boy is she a happier camper. She was downright grouchy earlier. She's also doing the band thing with a whistle. She woke up this morning and put on a church dress. Everything has to be fancy these days. I think she has an imaginary tiara on.

Tonight M has an end of the year block party to go to. I'm going to be home with the three younger ones. I still have to get a run in tonight or tomorrow. It's only 3 miles so I don't have to go far. It's the first .2 or so that is so dang dreadful. I'm wondering if it will ever get better.

Oh, and tomorrow morning we'll be going back to school. T didn't bring home his thermos and I don't want to have to pay 15 bucks for a new one. So we'll be revisiting school. It's too bad they don't have some work he could do while he was at it :)

Preschool is Over

S finished preschool today. She had a short program and sang some songs. Then they gave us her portfolio of work, some pictures, and we went out to the playground to play. I was sad as I looked at the pictures. Even though she wanted to go to preschool each day, it is evident that she just had some rough months. Her eyes were so empty in so many of them. It's interesting that they took a great picture of her (eyes engaged) the same day that I pulled out the camera to take pics of her to show DH that she had switched into her happy place (striped shirt picture recently put up on the other blog). She looked so happy at school that day too.

We were the last to leave preschool from her class. C has been wanting to play on the playground forever and we have always said no so it was really fun for her to get to play with S there. I was surprised that S could do little upside down flippy things on the monkey bars. Boy has she come a long way! The strange thing was that there were a bunch of kids from the other class. The teacher came over and said taht their parents came for the program and then left. One mom said she was going to go home and take a nap until the kid had to be picked up.

I hate to offend a bunch of people, (but in reality there aren't too many that read this so I won't be offending too many) but preschool is glorified day care. You really can teach your kids most of what happens in preschool in your home, at the park, at church, etc. That being said, S needed a break from me these past two years and I needed a break as well. But that's what preschool was for both of us. But it was daycare. That's all there is to it. C will be sad when she most likely doesn't get to go.

Today was really busy. In addition to the preschool program we had M's real program. DH stayed home and worked this mornign so he could go. She did great. I didn't get really teary yesterday but today I had to wipe my eyes. I looked at all these kids that are her friends and couldn't believe how much they had grown this year. I guess almost 5th graders are pretty much tweens to the T! I can't believe I am so lucky to have her.

While we were there DH checked the weather on his phone and then told me he had to take his motorcycle back home and drive the car. Later he realized that he had Alaska as the default on his phone. Oops!

Then I had my ballet class. It was slightly harder today. I don't generally get a lot of corrections because I know what needs to be corrected. She did however catch me today cheating on moving my leg from the back to the side. I knew I had cheated and I couldn't believe she caught me red handed. I just didn't have the strength to keep it up and so I let it drop. Oh well! I think I am going to take a class at night at another place just for a couple of months this summer until she restarts her classes. I'll miss it too much if I don't.

S went to preschool and I went to run an errand or two. Then we did the program, came home, got T off to swim team, cooked dinner, and then drove to the ballet carpool for M. While she was dancing I went for a 5K run outside. I so wasn't in the mood for it but once again, was glad when I finished. Two more runs this week and another week of training is down!

Tonight I have been a slacker. M made some posters for the teachers using candy. Since DH is still working I figured I could blog just a bit. Just maybe I can get my picture blog updated this weekend. I almost need to just get away to somewhere with wifi so I can blog and not have to worry about anything else.

Singing M

I didn't realize M could sing. I mean, she can really sing. Today I went to her dress rehearsal for her school musical. She has the lone solo in it for her class. I was a little worried because M doesn't like performing. She's not usually into having attention on her. But she was awesome. She hit every note in the song and after her teacher came up and mentioned to me that she was such a good little singer.

I don't know where she got it. It's not from me, the lady who can hit about 4 notes.

The kids seemed so grown up. I guess a lot of maturing happens in 4th grade. I did my best to not get teary as that would be embarassing for M.

What else? I did my run today. 3.1 miles. They weren't speedy but they were in the range I am looking to hit. It wasn't too exciting. The kids played at a park and a friend and I went around and around. But it's done and I am glad about that.

C was a bit sad. She saw her friend playing in the circle and C didn't get much of an acknowledgement as her friend walked past her. She sat on the curb and said, "Mom, she ditched me." It's not something you usually hear from your three year old.

Back to laundry I go. It's taking over and I need to be back at the helm. And well, I here C getting into the pantry which is NEVER a good thing.

Extracurricular Activities

Have I ever mentioned that we are a limit your extra activities family. At least that is how I feel when I hear about everyone else having kids in twenty thousand sports at once. One physcial and one musical activity per kid is enough.

That being said, I am starting to wonder if it isn't too dang much. I've been trying to plan out my driving schedule for the summer. It is going to be tight. T has swim 3 days a week at the same time M has to be at dance. So I am working on a carpool schedule that doesn't have me driving to dance on those days. Then there is the early morning violin lessons that have to be squeezed in. And of course, D is restarting dance and his 2 hour lessons start 30 minutes after M's finish twice a week. It's all bound be a little tricky. Right now every day of June is busy. Luckily we are done by mid afternoon 3 days a week. I'm dreaming of layign around the house resting. But we all know that is just plain dreaming. DH reminded the kids that summer means extra chores. It's time to learn to work so I guess I should be the example. :)

Over the weekend we went to the zoo. It was a chilly day for it but we had free tickets so we decided to go even if it was a little drizzly. It turned out to be a fabulous day for it. We got there about 10 minutes after the zoo opened and it was almost like we were the only people there. Here is was the latter part of May and two of the kids had their winter coats on. But it was perfect because the kids could run from exhibit to exhibit without me losing them in the sea of faces that pretty much all look the same. S's new word was habitat for that day but she kept forgetting it. One time it was rabbitat. That was my favorite one as when she said it we were looking at a rabbit. They were a little bummed that we weren't able to see any real panda bears. I couldn't get it through their minds that you just don't find pandas at every zoo.

That afternoon D had a birthday party to go to. We arrived home just in time to get him there. I was so glad that he was invited as it means things are going better socially at school. He was really excited as this was a party that he was invited to without T. I'm glad he is making some of his own friends.

I was one lazy mama that afternoon. My 6.47 mile run and a trip to the zoo resulted in tired legs. So I was a slug for a bit and then decided it was time to clean. The other kids had to do their chores anyway. They were pokey about them and it pretty much took them 2 hours to do chores that woudl take 30 minutes max. D came home and was bummed to find he still had chores as well. Luckily, he's a quick worker when he wants to be.

We then went to a neighborhood party. There was a giant rented bouncy thing and the kids had tons of fun on the slide. DH and I were harrassed a bunch for being overdressed for a neighborhood bbq. But we had ballet tickets and didn't want to change.

It wasn't my favorite ballet. It wasn't a story ballet and well, I like costumes. These weren't too fabulous. I'm also not so fond of the no tights thing that is so popular. I know it shows off their muscles and all but well, it makes me cringe most of the time.

And lastly, we dropped off our train table at DH's parent's house on the way home. Goodbye table! The kids most likely woudl have used it but really we don't need it anymore.

Today C gave her first talk in church. She was pretty funny. She wanted to hold that microphone like crazy. She did, however, speak clearly so she was somewhat intelligible. I was a bit worried because she wanted me to whispier in her ear, yet she didn't want to repeat what I said. She would just finish the sentence because she knew what was coming. Luckily, when it was the real deal she repeated what was on her paper. How did my baby get to be that old?

I'm sure I have a bunch of things tomorrow. I know I need to get a new E string for C's violin. Tomorrow is her first lesson. While I am out and about I am going to try to figure out what to do for this running skirt thing. I went online and found that my size is all sold out in every stinkin' color for the brand and style I wanted. UGH! That's what I get for waiting. Every other woman on the planet must have decided that it was going to be too dang hot to run in pants. So now I may just have to but a cheaper skirt (a la Target) and wear compression shorts under. It's not ideal but it might have to be what I do. I did find one other place that has decent longish ones. But they were 60 buckaroos and well, that's even spendier than the ones I found in the first place. That's what I get for waiting though.

So we have errands to run in the morning, laundry to do and a lot of it (no surprise), then two hours of violin lessons. I think T is going to have to miss his as I can't figure out how to have him at a group lesson and swim team at the same time. M has to go to her group lesson and will leave early so I can drop her off at dance 5 minutes late. If it weren't for them learning the Vivaldi concerto I would skip the lesson. It sure would make my life easier. But she needs to learn this one and so I am trying to work it out.

Things Learned From a Fieldtrip

1. A school bus that has a 78 person capacity can't really hold that many people.
2. School buses can totally pass semis on the freeway and if you look outside too long while they do that you start to feel sick.
3. If you have 2 4th grade classes on one bus, one kid will get sick and end up throwing up in a bag.
4. 4th grade girls and boys still pretend they don't like each other.
5. The weather an hour away can be much colder than at home.
6. Your 4th grader will ditch you on the bus for friends.
7. 4th graders really like to get others attention even if it means trying to start a YMCA song during lunch.
8. Dads really can handle the home front while the mom is gone.
9. Kids will tell you almost anything.
10. Once in a while, M will still let me snuggle up to her in public.

Not much to report

But I did get my run in. The first .6 were not so great as I thought it was brilliant to have C drive her trike around the block with me while I ran. I wasn't smart enough to think that she would stop for every single stinkin' ant and potato bug.

So I ran .6 and then we went home and I started on the treadmill while she jumped on the jumping castle. It was the best I could do.

What else? No news to report on the S funk. She is still in one. I'm hoping tomorrow works out better for her.

Speaking of tomorrow, I am going on a field trip with M. I hope she isn't too embarassed. I will be taking pics so you can harass me if I haven't updated the picture blog in two weeks.

M was a social butterfly. She wants to ride this Ripstik everywhere. Tonight she went to my friend's softball game with her daughter and had a grand ol' time riding the thing. That seems too old dang it!

T tried to get out of cleaning his room. That's about it for him.

D had a little snack meltdown. They have this thing about snacktime. It doesn't matter if they are hungry or not. By the time we got back from buying tomatoes and peppers from the nursery it was 4:45 and just too dang late for snacks. He got over it at dinner time.

S, well she had a day of it. But it was water day at school and she was happy to go and do the fun things there.

C rode that trike so dang slow, jumped on the castle, and helped me make homemade almond joys.

Coveting is Not a Good Thing

But dang it, I want these new Vibrams. I was looking at the website and they just came out with a new one. So now I have to figure out why I need the Bikila at 100 buckaroos when I have the Classics. Now the Classics to rub on my Achilles now and then but it's nothing that a little moleskin won't fix. Mine are so 'old school' now!

Oh but these look so dang snazzy (well, as snazzy as toe showing shoes can look).

So today I had my ballet class. I went out of my comfort zone and wore a skirt. I figure I have to get used to it for this half marathon anyway so why not break into it with black tights on underneath. I have an older running skirt that won't work for the half and wore that. It was too big but did the trick. If nothing else, I had better technique while wearing it because I couldn't slack off in the knee department. (Pants will let you hide little knee bends... not tights though!)

I went back to get the girls at my friend's house and S had a meltdown. She started freaking out. I am happy to report that it didn't take her forever to get over it and.... drumroll.... she didn't hit me :) She still struggled on and off during the day but heck, the whole day didn't go to pot so we'll take it.

I worked on setting up the jumping castle after taking S to preschool. The thing just wouldn't inflate all the way. Luckily, DH saved the day with some duct tape when he got home.

M had a church activity. She just HAD to ride her new Ripstik there.

T earned his Ripstik back. He managed to do ALL of what I asked him when he practiced without complaining. And imagine this, it wasn't so bad.

D wished his legs were longer so he could buy a Ripstik. I told him he could spend his money on one like M did but that it wouldn't help him because it would just have to wait a while. You just have to have your legs so far apart to maneuver those things and his legs aren't long enough yet. He wasn't so happy with my suggestion of using his skateboard more. That being said, he didn't totally freak out. This is progress.

S had a few breakdowns but got out of them to an extent. This is great practice for her. It won't help us much to just avoid things that cause breakdowns. She has to learn to get out of them. She is super excited about water day at preschool tomorrow. She has been talking about which swimsuit she is going to wear for two weeks.

C was so happy when DH fixed the jumping castle. I imagine she'll do that a bunch yesterday. We went to a safety fair at the church (a boy's Eagle Scout project). We had to walk a whole 1/2 a mile to get there. C starts saying, "My side hurts. My head hurts. When someone's head hurts you give them pink medicine." What kiddo? You have a side stitch and it hasn't even been a 1/2 mile of very slow walking? It sounds like we need to do more of that.

DH is doing a run on the treadmill (in his old school Vibrams I might add). I skipped today. It's funny how if you start out the week not procrastinating, you want to run even when you should take a day off. I kept thinking I should do it today. But in reality, these knees need a recovery day here and there so I will do a run tomorrow sometime. The six miler needs to actually go somewhere so I have to finish the run to get home. That's the trick with me... I have to head away from mi casa.

I really should go through the kids' rooms and get rid of some stuff before they finish off the school year and know what is going on. I'm tempted to ditch some toys too :)

My goal this next week is to try not to miss anything that is going on for the end of the year at school. It seems like there is just so dang much and we are busy busy. So here is to remembering dress rehersal for M's show, the real show M has a solo in, the show that M is a background singer (another class stars in that one), teddy bear day, 3 'yard sale' days at school (junk needed to be sent for those), preschool end of year show, ballet lessons, swim team, group violin lessons, etc. Add to it two birthday parties, tickets for the zoo on Saturday, season ballet tix, a neighborhood party and I am toast!

A new PR

I ran my fastest 5k today on the treadmill. Laugh if you wish but I am thrilled to have averaged under 12 minute miles. 36:36 was my time. I'll take it.

Last night DH was going through crud that has been in our basement. Heck, I am so indecisive. I just couldn't figure out to do with my old teaching stuff until I realized the kids can sale it at their year end garage sales at school. If it goes to a good cause then I don't feel so bad.

DH also found some emails I had printed out from right after we had Niko. It's interesting to read what we were thinking back then. I'm glad they were printed out because I no longer have that email account and would have forgotten so much.

What else? S got sugar back. That's a huge victory for her. She was a happy camper about her sugar laden Coco Puffs today. DH told me he took a day off this week so I could go on a field trip with M. This might just be the last year she allows me near her at school. Yesterday at violin lessons I was sitting there and she didn't want me to pay attention. She said to me, "Can't you just draw or something?"

Um, no my darling. I shall listen even more carefully. :)

Speaking of violin, I took the two smallest violins in to have the little girls measured. It turns out that C has longer limbs and fingers than S and needs the 1/10 and S needs the 1/16 still. I pleaded with C to please finish her potty training before she started playing the violin. D is also moving up a size. He has a few arm/wrist placement things to correct and the teacher thinks it'll just be easier to do it on the new one rather than try to do it twice. I do have to get a new shoulder rest for him as T's just won't cut it. Their necks are so different. D really did have a good lesson though. He's a little frustrated because I have to help him fix his hand and he doesn't want to do it. But such is life!

What else? T had swim team yesterday. I have no idea how it went.

Yesterday I made a dent in the laundry but didn't finish it off by any means. And today I have been a slacker and haven't managed a heck of a whole lot except be a little prideful on my 'speediness'. It's a rainy day and I just don't feel like plowing through activities. So I'll have to crack down when the kids get home and try to do my work.

Busy Weekend

Life has been relatively busy since I last blogged.

Friday morning I went to S's parent teacher conference. It's no shocker that she is very ready for K. It's a little bit funny because a few of the things weren't checked off on readiness skills and the teacher was like, "I know she can do that we must have missed something. Oh, here, she can actually put more in order than 3 (or whatever)."

Um... I know she can do all that stuff. I'm not one single bit worried about her academically. She's incredibly bright. So I left knowing what I already knew. It's pretty much the story of every parent teacher conference I go to. Someday I am going to get a shocker and it won't be pretty.

We cruised home because I had someone coming to my house to babysit while I took my ballet class. I told her sorry it wasn't more tidy but that I just didn't have time. The other kids arrived and off we went.

Ballet class was hard work. When you know how things are supposed to be done it's dang hard. The mental part is easy. The combinations are easy and predictable. But this body of mine just doesn't work like it used to. So I don't look in the mirror. But I still love it and will be sad when it's over.

Then I came home and switched to my running gear, grabbed the kids, and headed out to drop them off to the play place. Once they were there I headed to a place where lots of 'runners' run. Of course, I had never been there. It was getting a little stormy and I kind of wanted to back out but decided I couldn't because I needed to get the run in. So off I went with a key, a cell phone, and a ten dollar bill in my little zipper pocket. The first half was pretty nice (for out of shape me) and then I turned around and had to go against the wind. That half wasn't so nice. 31 minutes for the first half and 36 minutes for the second. I was slightly frightened at the end when I was away from the road and I saw two scruffy looking men carrying cubes of beer down by the river. I kept thinking, "Oh no, I am too dang tired to run any faster and they aren't drunk enough to not be able to catch me." So I picked up the pace and finished up. Other than that it wasn't bad. But next time I run that, if alone, I am going to stick to the part of the trail that is in view the entire time. I also did the whole race in my Vibrams. I was worried about that as well because I hadn't ever gone that long in them but they were okay. I just hate the thought of putting my real shoes back on.

I went to the grocery store to grab a few good deals and an apple for myself as a post workout treat and then grabbed the kids and headed home. I had very little time as it was my day to drive to dance and I needed to have dinner ready before leaving. So I made some homemade spaghetti sauce and then did a crock pot full of chili too since I had too much meat. DH came home to sauce but no noodles. Luckily I had the regular noodles out as well as the brown rice bran ones and so all he had to do was cook them.

I was too tired to go and do anything during M's dance class so I sat there and read magazines. M hates it when I watch so I tried not to. I am doing my best to not be a ballet mom. I don't always succeed but I try to give it a good effort.

Then Saturday morning I got up and went yardsaling with a friend. I scored several things including a bunch of word family books for the two little girls. I think I got twenty of those. I need to teach S to read this summer. She is more than ready and if she learns to read she might be able to fill her time with things that aren't destructive when she gets in a bad mood. And of course, C thinks she can learn to read too. Why not try?

T had a birthday party so I reminded him that he couldn't go unless his chores were done. He worked on them without complaining. I wish the kid had a birthday party to go to every Saturday. While they were working I made some oat flour cottage cheese pancakes. DH got just oat flour pancakes and M wouldn't eat them and I believe she had cereal. (I left to take T to the birthday party and she was still doing her chores.) The kids seemed to like the pancakes and I liked that they were eating something a little healthier than cold cereal.

I had this odd idea that I was going to come home from dropping T off and get my run in for the day. But of course, this did not happen. I had to get the other kids ready to go to another birthday party for my cute little nephew who was turning one. They had a big Hawaiian party for him. So all the kids had to bathe. I've gotten over the whole you have to look perfect when people see you thing, but stink just doesn't cut it. And it has gotten warmer so they get stinky fast.

Once everyone was ready it was time to go pick up T and head to the other party. T had such a fabulous time at the jumping place. He was really grateful he got to go. And his friend liked the metal detector thing we gave him according to T.

We headed an hour north to our other party. The kids had so much fun because they had cousins there to play with. I was in heaven because I didn't have to cook a meal for them and they had protein that would work for me. My nephew was adorable. He has to be one of the cutest babies on the face of the planet. While there, my MIL gave DH the 'quit riding a motorcycle' speech. I didn't say a word. I understand her frustration. On of DH's second cousins or second cousins removed three times or something is in the hospital in a vegetative state. It's serious business. She said if we were saving money by driving the motorcycle, she'd pay the difference. DH told her we weren't saving anything and pretty much left it at that. This is my take on it. DH is not a risky guy in any way. He has a house that is often chaotic by the time he is heading home (the witching hour it is!). The motorcycle makes it more fun to come home. While driving home we talked for a minute about it and I joked with him that if we sold it we could go to Europe and he could ask his mom to watch the kids for two weeks while we did it. I told him with out luck, we would then get killed in a plane crash and she'd have all five of them to deal with.

Once we got home and got the kids to bed I decided I had better get my behind on that treadmill. I went a little farther than I should have because it was feeling pretty good. Hopefully I won't be blessed with shin splints this week for doing more than I am ready for. I've got to remember that over training isn't what it's cracked up to be ;)

Oh and speaking of running I think I found a running skirt to wear for this race. This race apparel thing has kind of had me perplexed. It's going to take me a long time to finish so it'll be pretty toasty by then. But I don't have running legs yet and most likely won't find them before this race. So I found a cute skirt online that should do the trick. It's a little spendy and makes me feel a little bit like a running imposter. Who am I to wear some real running clothes? But alas, I don't want to be uncomfortable or in pain because I have the wrong stuff on. And well, I might look ridiculous anyway because I just don't want to ever run in my real shoes again. How dumb will it look to see some fakin' bacon runner wearing Vibrams, a running skirt, and both knees braced up. But oh well. I'll just have pics from the waist up :)

I finally let my guard down and let the kids have cereal for breakfast. I just had too much to do this morning. So Frosted Flakes and Coco Puffs came to the rescue. I had all the kids ready and fed lunch before leaving for choir practice. Then DH surprised me by not only getting the kids to church, but they were on time and they walked! C fell asleep on my lap during Sacrament. T fell with his head on DH's lap. My eyes kept drooping... Are you seeing a pattern here? We were all tired. And it was too bad because the speakers were actually really good today. It was a good thing we were on the second row. You just can't zonk out when you are that close to the speakers.

Tonight was a leftover night. Everyone is hungry right after church so we had leftovers brought from my nephew's party. I just had to quickly make some rice and cut up a big bowl of strawberries and we were set! That is my kind of Sunday meal.

This week should be relatively busy. I need to till my garden and get my plants put in. Time is passing a little too quickly and we keep getting storms that moisten the ground. I told DH I'd try to rent a tiller tomorrow but he doesn't think I can lift one in and out of the SUV. He's probably right. But it needs to be done before it storms. What to do?

I also have mounds of laundry. How does this keep happening? I'm back to having a load for every color of the rainbow it seems. But heck, it's almost summer and that means shorts and sandals. It seems trivial but it really helps. (Plus, I hate matching socks.)

I have to fit my runs in too. We'll most likely end up at a park I can run around and watch the kids play. That works for things 3 miles and under.

Now how's that for a boring recap of 5 days.

Fingers Crossed

I'm hoping S snaps out of things tomorrow. Today was the second day of one of the episodes. I tried all the good theraputic parenting things. I even had her come clean the floors with me so we could bond and talk while doing something productive. (It's easier to just clean the floor myself.) But the kid that came in and demanded breakfast when we were still in bed was in the same mood when it was her bedtime. I got out a bunch of toys that can't destroy walls and although she usually loves doing picnics for her animals, it was just plain boring for her today. She wouldn't play with them. She kept asking questions for which she already knew the answer.

But there is hope. When she snaps out of these times it's quick. I'm hoping a good rest and a slight increase in her meds will help her snap out. It's much more fun to have her around when she isn't trying to control everything. And I think it's much more fun for her too.

As for the kiddos....

M was charmed by C today as C made up a pink sauce song.

T actually turned in his homework the first day he could for the week. He also didn't complain about cleaning up after the dog or taking the trash out. We are making progress.

D had a sub and still had a good day at school :) He spent a chunk of his free time on the wet swing set hanging like a monkey.

S... well, she's sleeping.

C actually took a nap and that gave me time to read a book. (I should have cleaned but read the Princess Academy instead.)

I cleaned, held S when she was out of control, read S and her friend books while C threw a fit because she had to clean up her toys, found a great deal on soap, read a book, cooked some halibut, visited a friend, tried to find an excuse to not run, and then ran anyway. It turned out to be a pretty busy day!

Mother's Day

You know this just isn't my favorite of holidays. I like to give people things just because I am thinking of them and not because I need to. But mostly, I got that bad Mother's Day taste in my mouth from years of trying to have kids without luck and then passing the first 'real' Mother's Day at the cemetery. Now I just feel for all the people who have dead moms, long to be moms, have dead kids, have kids that make rotten choices, etc.

But today I didn't feel too bad. DH fessed up last night that he just was too busy to do anything for Mother's Day and I didn't feel bad at all about that. I don't have gazillions of needs. Heck, this way I can go and shop the clearance racks of Target and not have an ounce of guilt :) I told the kids I just wanted them to be good for Mother's Day. I know it's not fair to pick the hard stuff.

So I woke up around 6:30 because I heard C wheezing a bit. She has been croupy the past couple of days and so I went to watch her chest rise and fall. She was fine. And off to sleep I went. The next thing I knew, DH was hauling her into my bathroom quickly with a pan. Then she barfs.

Now here is where the big Mother's Day gift comes in. Not only was I sleeping in but C had also thrown up in the kitchen and DH cleaned it up. Vomit isn't his thing and he did it for me. If that doesn't show love then I don't know what does.

So I missed church and stayed home with C (who insisted eating bacon about 45 minutes after barfing). She seemed fine the rest of the day but did take a 3 hour nap. I read a book for book club which I didn't find nearly as entertaining as I expected. I made a scrappy dinner and did a little work around the house.

Oh, I did get one cool gift. M made me a book about myself at school. It's a real book but must have just been blank and she did all the artwork and writing. It was adorable and I love it. My favorite line is in chapter 7. She wrote, "My mom has short brown hair, hazel eyes, and thinks she has to wear lots of makeup." She also put some made up words in her story and then included a glossary with translations. The kid cracks me up.

I also now have 5 new flower decorated pens and a new key chain.

I do love being a mother, even if those that make me a mom drive me to the brink of insanity.

I love that M still wants me to hold her even though she is a big girl. But she also likes to hang out with me if none of her friends are present. She thinks its fun to have split competitions with me because she always wins.

I love that T just makes me laugh. I love that he rarely scowls. I love that he plays with kids that other kids ignore.

I love that D is so hardworking. I love that he will sit and read his books to C and even wait for her if she has to leave for a minute. I love that he takes care of his things and is organized in a way that I am just NOT.

I love that S is so happy to try new things. I love that she will sit and let me do her hair for a long time to turn her into a princess. I love how she always wants her babies to take a nap.

I love little Miss C. I love how she tries to be like the big kids. I love that she sneaks in for snuggles but then is wiggly. I love how she has taught herself to write half the letters in the alphabet and can tell me what letters words start with.

And of course, I love my angel boys in a way that is indescribable. They don't cause me grief, nor do they ask for snuggles, yet they impact every day of my life as I strive to be worthy of being their mom.

(Oh, and we did a race as a family yesterday. I wasn't last. Thank heavens there was a little 3 year old or a very short something else doing it. It was the first race where everyone participated. M,T,D, and I did the 5k and DH,S,and C did the one miler. It's a good thing I am working on getting over my humiliation about being so dang slow. I'm going to need to be over it because I'll probably finish dead last in the half marathon. I'm tempted to pay someone to be slower than me!)

Looking around

My house is still a wreck. I'm just going to have to be content with the fact that I took a ballet class that kicked my behind, ran for 45 minutes, mowed the lawn, and held a sleeping C.

That's what I managed to get done.

M got the A okay to go back to pointe work next week. She is happy.

T got in some huge trouble at school. It sounded worse before I heard what might be the whole story. After I read the email, I went and pulled him out of school for the last hour and let him come clean out window wells. No one likes that job. I bet he doesn't do that again.

D had a good day at school or so it seemed. He was especially helpful tonight when I was mowing the lawn. I was grateful for the help. It's a pain to mow under some of the parts of a swingset. I got the okay for him to start dance again in the summer if he wishes. He's excited.

S played and played today. I guess she got a really grouchy voice one time at her friend's house and it caused her voice to go hoarse. But she had a fun day. My friend made her a super cute crocheted headband and she is thrilled to wear it. She looks pretty cute with it on too.

C started having allergy issues after playing in the grass all day. I'm hoping we don't wake up to croup. She's asleep on the floor in the family room and I just can't believe how old she looks. She's a giant.

Let's see... Me? I am sore once again but oh so glad to have another ballet class under my belt and to be caught up on my running. I'm doing a 5k tomorrow and then I'll have to add an extra mile.

DH actually got home at a normal time. AMAZING! He didn't get into his marathon. I can't tell if he's super disappointed or not.

Track Meet and Other Fun Things

This morning we packed up and watched M at her track meet. She gave me the whole please don't come speech but I knew she wanted us to come because she had mentioned the track meet so many times.

It was freezing. Okay, it wasn't truly freezing but I was hovering between the 30s and 40s and was windy on top of it. Didn't I just have a cinco de mayo lunch yesterday?

We watched from a distance. I liked watching M race. She's like me in that we aren't really fast twitch fiber people. But I adore her so I like watching her race. It was also fun to watch her mingle confidently with friends in the bleachers.

I ran into one of M's old friend's mother. This little girl goes to a new school now. She asked me a little bit about our adoption. I found out they have taken two older children and are trying to work things out. I told her to give me a call. I thought, "At least you will know you aren't crazy." Then I thought, "Or maybe you'll just know you have company in being crazy." Then I found out she has lost two mid term pregnancies. It's amazing how much you can find you have in common with someone. I told her we would have to meet in the park and chat a bit.

I had this grand idea to take the kids to this history museum thingy tonight. It's sort of a travelling exhibit. The kids were having a great time until I realized that C was going to lose her very wet diaper and I told them we had to go. D couldn't handle it and ended up throwing a large tantrum there. I wish they would realize that it just makes me not want to take them anywhere. All that was left was the make your own fossil thing. The problem was that the line was 15 minutes long and then it took 15 minutes for it to set. C's diaper didn't have 30 minutes in it and it was already past 3 of their bedtimes.

I'm hoping tomorrow is a better day for him and that the incident didn't set off a period of difficulty.

So today-

M did her track meet and a make up ballet class.
T went to bed rather hungry because he wouldn't eat anything on his plate at dinner except the oranges.
D tried to be very helpful before we went to the museum thing.
S choked C when C rode her scooter (which wasn't hers... it was David's). The good news is that I asked her what she thought of that when just minutes before C had shared her special baby and let her play with it. I think I saw remorse. Choking=bad. Remorse=not so bad.
C managed to sneak both a Capri Sun and a pack of gum out of my purse without me realizing it. The purse was on my shoulder.

Oh and me, I could hardly move today. I was so sore this morning that I didn't want to even get out of bed. I'm hoping tomorrow is better. I'm old. That's all there is to it :)

Ballet Class

Okay, I would love to just gush a bit.

I was so dang excited for this class. It was fabulous. It made me feel quite alive. Somehow it takes me back to the time when I was pretty good at something physical. I was actually quite thrilled that it was a beginner beginner class that turned into a beginner class with adjustments for people who have had more training. My body, however, couldn't quite support my memory.

I did manage double pirouettes on my good side (the one without the bone wedged in my ankle) and a couple of doubles on my bad side. Then, in old lady form, I stayed dizzy. I don't know why this happens when I spot. It never would have happened when I was a youngin. How could growing kids in your belly affect ones equilibrium so much?

I have to ignore the mirror because it just isn't pretty. This is going to sound horrible but it's just flat out true in ballet. Chubby lines just aren't pretty (by that I mean line of the body). Chubby arms don't make pretty positions. But I decided I just didn't care. It felt fabulous to move in a balletic way and so I just ignored that mirror.

Then I went to lunch with a friend to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Nothing says Cinco de Mayo like a salad :)

I followed the lunch with a 35 minute run in my basement. I am pretty dang sore now. I don't know if it was the ballet class or the running but boy my legs are wiped out.

M went to play at a friend's house after school. I picked up my good friend's daughter from school. She said she was too scared to walk home because of a dog and she said that she must be from my family (as I am known to have unreasonable fears). So I went and picked the cutie up and showed her how she could walk on the other side of the street.

T had swim. The kids were playing in my friend's backyard and so I stayed to watch for a bit. I couldn't believe how T could keep going. When I left he had probably already gone 400 meters at full speed. His coach said he is going to start swimming 100m at races.

D was happy to play outside.

S had fun at school and playing with friends.

C peed on my friend's floor. EWWWW! That's always nice. When is this girl going to potty train herself. (And yes, she did have a pullup on. She just didn't change it when I told her to. Lesson to self: Don't trust a 3 year old.)

Magic Touch

I still have it :)

Last night I was upstairs trying to get a few things done. T bolted up the stairs. I could tell he was still half asleep. He had one of C's sandals in one hand and a game piece in the other. He frantically mumbled something about how he had to put them away. I could tell he was still pretty much asleep. So I grabbed him and took him over to the couch and snuggled with him. His heart was about to pop out of his chest it was beating so fast. I just held him on my lap for about 20 minutes as he slept and his heart quit racing and returned to normal.

On a side note, it's getting harder to hold him as he is a GIANT.

Today is my first ballet class in a long time. I mentioned it to the girls and S had ecouraging words. She asked if I had ballet clothes to which I responded that I did. She said, "Wow, they must be really big!"

Nice, way to make me feel better. I was already planning on covering up those dance clothes with a pair of exercise pants.

There are five of us from my neighborhood doing it and so it'll be really fun.

DH is still very busy. Once he goes to sleep he pretty much wakes up almost every 2 hours to run reports for work. I have a feeling he will crash this weekend.

Working Working Working Day and Night

DH just left for work. This is worth recording because it was after 9 am when he left. It's a rarity for him to go in so late. I told him to not let anyone harass him as I figured it out and he has worked 33 hours since Friday morning. In fact, I think we should go on a vacation but since that isn't an option he should take sleeping in and a morning run and consider it all good.

The kids are all off to school (the three bigger ones) and I have a second load of laundry going. I would love to type all day to avoid doing more of it but it just isn't going to clean itself. There's enough to keep that machine going for the entire day.

Monday always passes quickly. We have working around the house. Today I'm going to check out some deals at a new grocery store. Just call me the almond queen when I am done because I plan on buying enough to challenge the weight of a young toddler. Then it's lessons lessons lessons... okay.... just violin, swim, and ballet.

Gosh, come to think of it, thinking of it that way makes it seem like it's practically bedtime :)

Bummer

M opened the box and discovered that unlike the picture on the front of the box, this waveboard has skulls.

It went back.

Just going to fess up

I'm blogging because I am avoiding my treadmill. I just don't want to get on the thing tonight. I know I need to, but I just don't want to. UGH!

I did make it 47 minutes on that thing yesterday. That sounds more impressive than it really is as I am so dang slow that a ladybug could have beat me.

A quick update on the family-

M is out maybe buying her Ripstik (or other waveboard) with DH. I'm assuming she'll bring one home and that her savings will be depleted. I'm okay with that. Last night C sneaked down in M's bed and snuggled with her the whole night. I think it's sweet that M will let her.

T combed his hair this morning (or so I thought) with water. We were going to a baptism. It was an hour away and by the time we got there he was a ragamuffin (a cute one but STILL). I think he just needs really short hair. He's a low maintenance kid.

D has quite the fashion sense. He did NOT want a plain oxford to wear today. It had to have a pattern. He's been regressing a bit in the last few days. But I just start throwing a fit of my own about something and it seems to snap him out of it. There's nothing like seeing your mom throw herself on the ground because the dishes won't clean themselves to cause you to quite whining.

S has had good and bad moments. At the moment I am worried to check my french doors because it sounds like the wood cracked when she slammed into them mad. But really, other than that, she has done much better. Today we did collages with random paper that I cute into shapes and I was really surprised that she didn't want to just go for it. That's so not her personality to refrain from taking control. I finally told her, "You are the boss of your art project." She loved that. I just have to learn how to give her control when it's okay.

C has been a turkey. Once again she got into toothpaste. She did the entire bathroom mirror and part of the floor. How about you brush your teeth with that thing kiddo? Yesterday we were snuggling and she was giving me point by point instructions. "Dad snuggles like this...." (She grabs my arm and yanks it around her.) The other arm goes like THIS.

DH- He has had mucho work but we are glad for the job :)

Me- I was glad to get a good run in yesterday considering I hate treadmills. I wish I wanted to do it again. I really think I might be able to do this half and not die.

Oh, the kiddo is home. Off I go to see if she made a purchase.

She did, a red one.
